Save the Pumpkins is the 18th episode in airing order of Season 2 of Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City, and the 6th episode in the official order. It premiered on October 15th, 2022.

Summary[]

Strawberry Shortcake and friends are excited to carve their Fright Fall pumpkins! That is until Blueberry busts their plans…

Plot[]

The episode begins with the Berry Besties working at their carts when they hear the back-up beeper for Strawberry Shortcake's truck. All of them rush over to her as she parks the Extraordinary Berry, the roof garden carrying a mountain of pumpkins on top.

Cutaway: Strawberry Shortcake mentions that when she lived in Berryville, one of her favorite Fright Fall traditions was going to Pumpkin Crumble's pumpkin patch to pick the perfect pumpkin-carving pumpkin, as she picks up a pumpkin to punctuate her point. She chuckles and tells the viewer to say that three times fast.

Strawberry tosses a pumpkin to each of her friends. Blueberry Muffin is instantly enamored with her pumpkin and hugs it. She "listens" to the pumpkin, and learns his name is Paul. She tells Paul that she loves his name, and introduces herself to him. She then overhears Orange Blossom declaring that she can't wait to carve her pumpkin up, which makes her gasp. Lime Chiffon intensely says that she loves the smell when she slices the pumpkins open, worrying Blueberry. Lemon Meringue brings up how much she loves reaching in and pulling out the pumpkin guys, making Blueberry even more worried. Strawberry and the other Berry Besties prepare to carve the pumpkins, approaching them menacingly with knives in each hand. As they raise their hands with their knives at the ready, Blueberry yells for them to stop and asks what they're doing.

Strawberry, mildly confused, reminds Blueberry that they were just getting ready to carve some pumpkins. Blueberry calls them monsters and tries to comfort Paul. She tells her friends that the pumpkins have hopes and dreams, and they don't want to be carved.

Cutaway: Lemon Meringue is confused.

Cutaway: Orange Blossom is confused.

Cutaway: Lime Chiffon rolls her eyes and groans, realizing what's going to happen next.

Strawberry tries to tell Blueberry that carving probably doesn't hurt pumpkins. Blueberry "listens" to Paul, and tells Strawberry that he said that it does hurt. Strawberry looks over to her friends, who all proceed to facepalm.

Cutaway: Strawberry reiterates that she loves carving pumpkins for Fright Fall, but she doesn't want to upset Blueberry. She begins fretting over her dilemma.

Blueberry whispers to Paul that she'll protect him, and runs off, as the screen zooms out to show the rest of the Berry Besties huddled in a circle away from the pumpkins. Strawberry asks what their plan is, and Orange suggests explaining to Blueberry that pumpkins don't have feelings. Lemon questions if they're sure about that, and her friends all look at her. Lemon defensively says she was just checking. Strawberry decides that they should just talk her through the situation, and begins talking to Blueberry only to find her, and the pumpkins, gone. Strawberry notes that she probably should have seen that coming.

The Berry Besties find Blueberry Muffin, meditating atop a suspiciously steep stack of meditation pillows. Blueberry greets her friends and innocently asks them what brings them to this place in the universe. Her friends all look at each other, and Lemon scoffs. Strawberry tells Blueberry they were just wondering where all the pumpkins went, gesturing to the giant mountain of pillows. Blueberry claims she has no idea, and suggests they went to a place where they wouldn't be sliced and diced. Orange finishes Blueberry's sentence by pointing out the pumpkins are vegetables, and Lime corrects her, pointing out that pumpkins are technically classified as fruit. Lemon walks over to the pillow mountain and lightly kicks it. The pillows, and Blueberry, all fall, revealing the pumpkins hidden underneath. Blueberry gives up, tearfully telling her friends to take the pumpkins and leave to satisfy their barbaric instincts as she chucks Paul away, Strawberry brings back Paul and tells Blueberry that it wouldn't be fun carving the pumpkins without her, explaining that they just want to make the pumpkins look cool for Fright Fall. Blueberry snatches Paul back, questioning if the pumpkins really must be carved. Strawberry tries to respond, as she looks over at the pumpkin pile, and she gets an idea, saying that they don't have to be carved. The other Berry Besties are confused.

At the carving table, Strawberry puts away the knives and dumps a box of art supplies on the table instead. The Berry Besties grab some paint tubes and begin decorating their pumpkins. Strawberry makes hers look like an elderly grandma, as Blueberry finger frames Paul. Lime places a wig on her pumpkin and draws a face on it with marker, making her's look like a Renaissance noblewoman. Blueberry measures and inspects Paul. Orange Blossom mixes up a green slime and pours it on her pumpkin, which has a grimacing smile with a purple top hat. Blueberry puts on welding equipment and, well, welds Paul, causing him to shine. Lemon just drew a simple smiley-face on her pumpkin, and places it onto a robot, with the pumpkin now acting as the head. The robot suddenly begins marching forward, causing Lime to flee in terror. Blueberry finishes decorating Paul, revealing that she literally just painted him blue. The Berry Besties all look upon their decorated pumpkins, proud of their work.

Cutaway: Strawberry admits that traditions don't work for everyberry, but notes that's why new traditions are made. She states that it's not what's done that matters, but who it is done with.

Strawberry compliments the pumpkins, and Blueberry points out they did it without having to carve them. Huckleberry Pie then greets the girls, as he proudly shows off his carved pumpkin, which has a gruesome face with pumpkin guts oozing from the mouth and a knife stabbed through the right eye. The girls all gasp and look over at Blueberry, who just stands there in shock. Huck is confused at the girls' reactions, and questions if this is a dream. He then worries that it's one of those dreams where he's naked, and covers his clothed body with the pumpkin. Blueberry walks over to Huckleberry and takes his pumpkin, putting it up to her ear. After "listening" to the pumpkin, Blueberry chuckles and says that she was wrong, and pumpkins do love being carved as it makes them feel special. The other Berry Besties react with a mixture of confusion, bewilderment, and raised eyebrows. Blueberry tells her friends that pumpkins are hard to understand, and she's much better at speaking sweet potato. The Berry Besties stare at Blueberry in confusion, Orange rolling her eyes, while Lemon groans in frustration as the episode ends.

Cast[]

Non-Voiced Appearance[]

  • Pumpkin Crumble (mentioned)
  • Paul the Pumpkin (plant)

Trivia[]

  • If one looks closely at the background when the Berry Besties are huddled together, Blueberry Muffin can be seen running back and forth carrying the pumpkins away.
  • Paul is the third plant named by Blueberry, after Clint and Gerald the mints from Mint-eresting.

Continuity[]

  • Blueberry's "ability" to talk to plants and her refusal to allow them harm once again plays a major role in this episode, first occurring back in Season 1 with "Mint-eresting".
  • This episode takes place before the previous, Scaryoke, as Orange and Lime's pumpkins can be seen as decoration for the Berryworks Fright Fall Fright Festival.
  • Inconsistency(?): Despite claiming that Berryville doesn't have a pumpkin patch in Johnnycake Cobbler's Sensational Sweetening Spritz, Strawberry mentions going to Pumpkin Crumble's pumpkin patch every year for Fright Fall. Though it isn't mentioned that Pumpkin Crumble's pumpkin patch is located in Berryville, so it's just as likely that the patch is in a nearby town.

References to Past Series[]

  • Strawberry's pumpkin is wearing the hat of her original 1980s incarnation. It also bears a bit of a resemblance to her Grandberry Jam, who is an elderly version of the 1980s Strawberry Shortcake.
