New Year's Wish is the 17th episode of the first season of Strawberry Shortcake: Berry In The Big City. It premiered on December 28th, 2021.
Summary[]
It is New Years Eve and Strawberry Shortcake and her friends stay up until midnight to make their super special New Year’s wishes.
Plot[]
Strawberry Shortcake looks up at the stars from the Berryworks' highline, talking about how this is her first Berry New Year's Eve in Big Apple City. Strawberry declares that this will be the best night ever and asks her friends if they agree. Orange Blossom, shivering, asks why they have to be outside in the cold. Lime Chiffon asks why they're staying up so late. Blueberry Muffin asks why does bubblegum grow on trees, causing everyberry to stare at her in confusion. Lime Chiffon explains that they don't, which Blueberry accepts. Strawberry tells her friends that they have to stay up until midnight so they can make their New Year's wishes. She brings up her Grandberry Jam, who would always tell her "A New Year's wish at the stroke of midnight always comes true". The Mean Berries, who were walking by the girls, overhear this. Bread Pudding almost laughs as he mocks what Strawberry said, while Sour Grapes tells her that wishes don't come true. Bread Pudding mockingly asks if Strawberry's still a little sprout and that noberry actually believes that, asking Raspberry Tart if she agrees with him. Raspberry nervously agrees and walks away, almost as if she's hiding something.
The Mean Berries walk away with Raspberry as Strawberry brushes off their rude comments, asking her friends what they're wishing for at midnight. Orange wishes for more hours in the day because "being this much of a boss is way more than a 24/7 commitment". Lime wishes for a first edition copy of "Anna Cake-renina", Blueberry wishes for world peas... so that everyberry can have access to healthy snacks, as she holds up a pea pod and takes a bite from it (This joke works much better when said out loud). Lemon Meringue wishes for a year filled with explosions, pulling out a confetti popper and setting it off. The four girls laugh as the confetti rains down, and Blueberry asks Strawberry what she's wishing for. Strawberry tells her friends that she always has a wish list up her sleeve, then literally takes the wishlist out of her sleeve and unravels it, revealing the list to be very long. Strawberry claims that she just has to narrow it down to what she wants. Orange tells her that she still has until midnight to think of her wish, as she starts jump-roping to keep her energy up and stay awake. Blueberry tells Lime to pinch her if she falls asleep, which she does as Blueberry begins dozing off. Blueberry compliments Lime, saying that she's good at pinching. Lemon shivers in the cold, and takes out her "Warmer Upper 600" sleeping bag to warm herself up, immediately falling asleep after getting inside.
The screen pans up to the moon, as time passes, panning back down to show Strawberry still going through her wishlist, saying to herself that it's is a New Year's wish, and she has to pick the right one. The other girls struggle to stay awake, as Lime drowsily pinches Blueberry again. Lime then asks who will pinch her if she falls asleep and dozes off, with Blueberry following suit soon after. Orange tries to continue lifting weights, but ends up falling asleep too, having tired herself out with her exercising. Strawberry happily announces that she has finally narrowed the wishes down to her top ten, but sees the girls all sleeping on a bench. Strawberry looks back at her wishlist and asks herself how will her wish come true, if she doesn't even know what to wish for. Suddenly, Strawberry hears singing. She follows the song, a very familiar song, until she finally reaches the source: Raspberry Tart, singing to herself as she tries to think of a New Year's wish.
Raspberry notices Strawberry watching her sing, and Strawberry says hi to her. Raspberry is surprised to see Strawberry, who asks if she wishes on a midnight star too, Raspberry admits it, explaining that her Grandmama Marmalade taught her that, as she would always say "A New Years Wish at the stroke of midnight always comes true", the two girls repeating the phrase simultaneously. Strawberry smiles, but Raspberry asks her not to make it weird, saying that everyberry has grandparents and it's not a big deal.
The two hear a bell chime, marking the stroke of midnight, they look up at the stars as they begin to make their New Year's wishes. Raspberry wishes to be the best baker in Big Apple City, and asks Strawberry if that's her wish too. Strawberry tells her no, well, she does want to be the best baker, but it's not the wish she's making for New Year's. Strawberry wishes to make even more friends in Big Apple City, as she and Raspberry look at each other, the latter making a small smile. They then hear Bread Pudding calling for Raspberry, asking where she is. Raspberry tries to threaten Strawberry that if she tells anyberry about their encounter, she'll find some way to embarrass her, and walks away. Strawberry shakes her head, smiling, as she heads back to her friends, all now sleeping on a bench. Strawberry yawns, and climbs onto the bench with them, wishing Big Apple City a berry happy New Year, and falls asleep too. Lemon then drops her confetti poppers on the ground, scaring everyberry and waking them all up. The girls all stare at Lemon, who sheepishly smiles in embarrassment.

Trivia[]
- This is the first episode to not be released on a Saturday, as it premiered on Tuesday instead.
- This episode marks the debut of Shannon Chan-Kent as Raspberry's singing voice, making Raspberry the second character in the series to have a singing double. The first is Lime Chiffon with Cassandra Consiglio providing her singing vocals.
- Raspberry shows a more vulnerable side to her this episode unlike anything she's demonstrated previously. Raspberry also stops actively scheming against Strawberry after this episode.
- This is the third episode where a Mean Berry gets along with one of the Berry Besties, though it's the first where it isn't the whole group.
- New Year's is the fourth holiday to be established in Berry in the Big City, but it's the first to retain its real-world name rather than a "berry-ized" version.
- Strawberry's wish about making more friends in Big Apple City as she looks at Raspberry is likely foreshadowing their eventual friendship in the Season One finale.
- "Sprouts" are established as the in-universe terminology to refer to younger children.
- In a way, Blueberry's question about bubblegum growing on trees isn't completely incorrect. as certain trees do produce a sap that is then used in manufacturing chewing gum. Considering Blueberry's personality, she was definitely thinking bubblegum literally grew on trees.
Continuity[]
- Grandberry Jam is mentioned again by Strawberry, as she is the one who told Strawberry about a New Year's wish always coming true.
- Raspberry and Strawberry's similarities are demonstrated again in this episode, but on a deeper level than in Mean Berries.
- The song Raspberry sings is similar to the first verse of No Ordinary Berry, the first song sung by Strawberry. Raspberry is using the song to encourage herself to make a New Year's wish, like how Strawberry used "No Ordinary Berry" to give herself confidence to explore Big Apple City.
- Raspberry Tart mentions her Grandmama Marmalade, who also told Raspberry about the New Year's wish like Grandberry Jam did to Strawberry.
- Marmalades, like jam, are fruit preserves, though marmalades always use citrus fruits like oranges.
References[]
- The book Lime Chiffon wishes for, "Anna Cake-renina", is based on the real-life Anna Karenina, an 1873 Russian romance tragedy novel written by Leo Tolstoy.
Errors[]
- In the credits for the episode, Shannon Chan-Kent's name is misspelt as Shannon Chant-Kent.
