Meet Strawberry Shortcake

Meet Strawberry Shortcake is the first special of the 2003 Series.

Synopsis[]

Strawberry Shortcake goes on a big adventure around Strawberryland to get the best gifts for her little sister Apple Dumplin''s first birthday.

Plot[]

The episode begins on a sunny day in Strawberryland. Strawberry Shortcake comes out of her house and explains to the viewer about Strawberryland: its climate, it's berries and it's residents: herself, her cat Custard, and her dog Pupcake. Eventually, Custard begins to complain about how Strawberryland isn't a "very fun place" to live in for a cat.

They all go inside to have breakfast, but Pupcake makes a mess. Suddenly, a big flower falls from the sky, and when it lands, a little girl appears underneath it. Strawberry introduces her as her little sister, Apple Dumplin', or Apple for short. Strawberry reveals that today is Apple's first birthday and wishes to have a birthday party for her. She thinks that Apple is very cute, but Custard disagrees.

Strawberry goes back into her house, whereas Pupcake begins to cause trouble again. She decides to celebrate Apple's birthday party in the kitchen and decides that she needs a list In order to get ready for her sister's birthday. She lists cookies, fruit, juice, party hats and a birthday cake and says that they need to go to different places to get all of them. Custard has a suggestion, but before she can finish, Pupcake jumps at her so Custard makes him slip and fall down. Custard asks if there is a place full of cats, but Strawberry thinks they'll have a much better time if they visit all kinds of people. Custard says, "No way. we probably won't like them if they're too different from us, and they probably won't like us." Strawberry replies that differences are the things that make people "interesting and fun" and that the world would be very boring if everyone was the same. Custard says that she'd like it If everyone was a cat so Apple hugs her.

They all set of on the adventure to find ingredients. Strawberry puts Apple and Custard in a wheelbarrow and let's Pupcake run freely as she walks down the berry path. After following the berry path for a while, Strawberry sees an arrow pointing somewhere and decides whether to follow it or not. Custard says that she wants to go to a place with many cats, but Strawberry says that they should go to cookie corners as cookies are the first item on her party list. Before she can go though, Pupcake accidentally turns the arrow to the opposite direction whilst chasing a butterfly. Strawberry sighs and continues following the correct road.

After a bit of walking, they eventually reach Cookie Corners and stop to smell the delicious aroma. She soon hears a strange noise which came from the grumbling machines of a factory. It is accompanied with chickens clucking, eggs breaking, flour pouring, mooing, and ingredients mixing and baking, which scare custard and make it hard for her to hear anything. Soon, a girl comes out of the factory with a bunch of deserts in a cart as Pupcake chases another butterfly and accidentally knocks her cart. She manages to catch the cakes, but her cookies fall down which Pupcake eats. Strawberry comes over to apologize to the girl, but the girl struggles to give out a proper response before Pupcake licks her; causing her to start giggling. The girl then introduces herself as Ginger Snap and Strawberry introduces herself alongside Apple, Custard and Pupcake. Then she apologizes to Ginger for the rough introduction, but Ginger tells her not to worry because it's nice to meet them. Then Ginger gives them a tour of her bakery as she likes having guests. Strawberry sees how big the bakery is and they all sing The Cookie Song . After singing the song, Strawberry admires the machine. Ginger says that she named it the amazing cookie machine, in which Custard gets sarcastic. Strawberry tells Ginger to not be bothered by her grumpy cat just as Pupcake begins to cause trouble. Strawberry tries to get Pupcake to stop, but flicks the wrong buttons and causes even more of a mess. Eventually she gets Pupcake to stop, but not before the entire factory was all covered with cookie mixture. Strawberry apologizes for the inconvenience and goes out of the factory. She lectures Pupcake to control himself as Custard complains about Ginger's machine, but before they go, Ginger tells them to come back as she can still make cookies. She changes some settings of her machine and begins to make cookies again. To custards surprise, the machine produces a tuna cookie which changes her opinion about it. Ginger let's Apple taste-test the cookies, which Apple likes. The machine also produces bone biscuits, which get Pupcake's attention. However, Strawberry tells him "no more biscuits" in which he obeys. Ginger gives Strawberry 2 batches of cookies as they are both gratful about befriending each other. After a bit of talking, Strawberry takes off, in hopes of finding somewhere with juice as Ginger waves at her.

After some walking, strawberry comes across Orange Blossom Acres. In there, a girl is picking oranges from the trees. Strawberry comes closer to the girl, and they both sing Friendship Grows Like a Flower. Once they finish singing, Pupcake accidentally falls into a basket full of oranges and knocks it off. He then hits an orange tree causing it to shake and drop down so many oranges to the point where he gets buried in them. Strawberry apologizes to the girl for Pupcake's over-excited behavior, but the girl says that she doesn't mind as she's also excited as she befriended Strawberry. Strawberry introduces herself and her sister and pets and the girl introduces herself as Orange Blossom. Orange asks Strawberry if she wants juice and explains that juice is the top product of Orange Blossom Acres, which gets Strawberry's attention as she's gathering items for Apple's birthday. Orange gives everyone juice, but custard refuses to drink it. Orange gives her milk instead, which gets Custard to like orange more, but she doesn't get to drink the milk as Pupcake jumps on her and spills the milk bowl.

Strawberry goes in search of a cake. Custard says that a tuna cake would be nice, which worries Apple. Strawberry says that she will find the perfect cake just as they reach cake walk. Strawberry and Apple eat a bit of the icing from a fence as they come across a cake-shaped house. Strawberry finds cake walk to be the coolest land of all of the lands they visited, but Custard thinks that cakes are meant to be eaten, not lived in. Suddenly, a girl comes out of the cake house. Once again, Strawberry introduces herself and her sister and explains that they want a cake. The girl says that they've come to the correct place: Angel Cake's Cake Shop, and introduces herself as Angel Cake. She lets them inside and first suggests a pound cake, but Strawberry finds it too heavy. Next, Angel shows them a sponge cake, which turns out to be too moist. Finally, Angel brings in a German chocolate cake, but Strawberry and Custard don't like it either. Angel explains that she can take special orders, and gives strawberry a cake book. Strawberry flips through the pages until she comes across an apple tree cake, whereas she and apple decide that it is the perfect cake. Angel writes a birthday message for Apple. Strawberry requests her to finish the cake by that afternoon, but Angel explains that would be impossible as it would be "too much work". Strawberry decides to leave as Angel apologizes for being being unable to make the cake in time. Suddenly, Strawberry gets an idea: she says that they should work together to make the cake in time. At first, Angel is resistant as she usually works alone, but she decides that it might be fun. Strawberry assigns everyone into different jobs (aside from Pupcake, who gets to sleep). With the help of everyone, (aside from Pupcake) Strawberry and Angel manage to make the cake in time. Angel thanks custard for her cleaning skills, but Custard thinks that angel only likes her for her tidiness. Strawberry thinks that the cake is the most beautiful cake she's ever seen while Angel thinks that it is the funniest cake she's ever made.

Strawberry continues her adventure looking for party hats. She realizes that the place she's in doesn't look like Upper Hat Rack, but keeps on going. Custard keeps on telling strawberry to go to different directions, but they all end up getting lost. Custard says that they will never make it to the party in time causing Apple to cry, making Custard feel a little guilty. Suddenly, a strange voice begins to recommend different directions. It is revealed that the voice is of a pony known as honey pie pony. She claims that she is specialized in showing directions and begins to tell strawberry of her stories. Eventually, everyone gets bored of honey's stories so strawberry cuts in her story and asks her about the direction to upper hat rack, in which honey offers her a ride to there.

However, Honey ends up leading them even farther from the upper hat rack than they already were. While riding, strawberry complements Custard for "improving" in making friends only for Custard to complain again. As Honey is about to tell another one of her stories, strawberry begins to feel like that "they are being watched". Pupcake appears to be playing next to someone's spying glass. Strawberry finds pupcake on a wooden roof of a house only for him to slip inside and fall onto the boy next to the observation center, causing both of them to slip down stairs. Strawberry goes inside the house to check on pupcake, only to find him licking a boy. The boy introduces himself as huckleberry pie so strawberry introduces herself and her friends once again. She finds hucks spy glass interesting and asks him whether if she can use it, in which huck allows. Strawberry peeks in the glass and notices a river made out of chocolate, known as river fudge. Huck asks everyone If they'd like to see river fudge in-person, in which they all agree.

While walking towards the river, Strawberry explains the story about how they were originally supposed to go to the upper hat rack. Huck explains that they are very far from there, in which Honey apologizes for her mistake. Huck stops to make a berry hat for custard, in which she thanks him. Huck then makes hats for everyone and puts them into the wheelbarrow. Strawberry thinks that these are better than the ones from upper hat rack and is greatfull for making 2 new friends (honey and huck). Once they finally reach river fudge, however, pupcake accidentally knocks the wheelbarrow while Hugging strawberry causing it to roll berry fast. At first, apple (who's still in the wheelbarrow) enjoys the ride until she realizes that she's in trouble. Strawberry gets onto honey to catch up with the wheelbarrow, but honey begins to tell another one of her stories. custard tells her that "this is not the time" so honey begins to run fast. As apple gets closer to the river, huck gets on his skateboard and follows her too. Strawberry throws a lasso at apple and manages to catch her at the last minute as Huck pulls the wheelbarrow. Honey says that she will tell this story to the others and custard comes to accept honey as a friend. However, the wheelbarrow rolls over again. Custard tries to catch it but fails so huck follows it. The wheelbarrow goes flying and so does everything in it. The wheelbarrow falls into the river but Huck manages to catch all of its contents. Strawberry goes to check on Huck as the wheelbarrow swims past them.

with the help of Custard, Huck makes a raft but it doesn't stay for long as Pupcake pulls a rope from it causing it to fall. Huck calls for Strawberry only for her to giggle. Pupcake gets caught in the rope he was playing with so Strawberry untangles him and they both begin to play with the rope. Strawberry makes Apple play catch with Pupcake as she helps Huck and Custard to rebuild the raft (which they all enjoy doing so). Strawberry, Apple, Custard, and Pupcake all get on the raft. Huck pushes the raft as he says goodbye to them and Honey claims that she will tell this story to the others. Strawberry tells Custard that Huck is "furless, tailless and even wiskerless" but Custard still shows interest in him. Custard thinks that Huck has some cat-like qualities on the inside.

When they all return to Strawberryland, strawberry prepares for Apple's birthday as she has obtained everything on the list. However, strawberry realizes that she forgot to invite guests, but suddenly she gets the idea to make invitation cards. Custard, Pupcake, and Apple all volunteer to help her but Strawberry soon puts an end to card-making before they all get carried away. Strawberry sends the butterfly-shaped birthday cards to her new friends: Ginger Snap, orange Blossom, Angel Cake, Honey Pie Pony, and Huckleberry Pie. Once Strawberry begins to consider having a berry small party, all of her friends show up. They all get excited and sing A Berry Happy Birthday to Apple. Once they finish singing, Custard actually likes the party and learns that being different doesn't mean bad.

The episode ends with Strawberry singing and dancing to Strawberry Girl in a Strawberry World .

As with the other Series 1 specials/episodes, the special is 45 minutes in length. There are also versions of the special that are shortened to the standard 22 minute episode length (used for the Game Boy Advance Video cartridge and US broadcast) or are split into two 22-minute parts (International broadcast).
- The HBO Family airing from 2003, among GMTV (UK) airings are at their standard 45-minute length.

This was the first full-length episode to be uploaded to the official Strawberry Shortcake YouTube Channel, on November 3rd, 2016. Up until that point, the only videos on the channel were either songs or Berry Bitty Adventure clips/clip compilations. It is also the first bit of 2003 Series content uploaded to the channel.
