Legend of the Lost Treasure, is the twelfth episode of the 2003 Series' second season and part of the direct-to-video special, Strawberry Shortcake: Seaberry Beach Party along with the episode, The Mystery of Seaberry Beach.
Summary[]
On a day at the Seaberry Shore, the girls and their new friend Seaberry Delight imagine themselves as mermaids, embarking on a grand adventure to find golden Sand Dollars, which Blueberry and Rainbow hoard. When the girls face a greedy ocean-resident sea serpent who also desires the treasure all for herself, Strawberry teaches them about sharing.
Plot[]
This story takes place on Seaberry Shore, following the same group of girls from the previous episode. It's unclear whether Strawberry, Blueberry, and Rainbow stayed a few days longer or if this is a separate visit, but it doesn't matter. The girls are building a sandcastle when Papaya destroys it by accident, then gets upset that it doesn't resemble a castle. They go into the water to clean up and spot a sand dollar. Blueberry and Rainbow start searching for more (Papaya finds one too). Seaberry tells them the legend of the Sand Dollar Mountain.
The narrative shifts underwater, where the girls are portrayed as mermaids. Mermaid Strawberry finds a shell, leading into a musical number about appreciating their surroundings. They then discover gold sand dollars. Mermaid Seaberry warns them about a mountain of these sand dollars, saying it's risky to search for it. Mermaid Blueberry and Rainbow, excited by the prospect of finding treasure, dismiss her warning. Mermaids Strawberry and Coco also decide to join the search, more for fun. When Coco can't find any, Strawberry gives her one. Seaberry refuses to take any. Blueberry and Rainbow become competitive, hiding their finds from each other and wandering off. Menacing red and orange fish are shown.
Meanwhile, Strawberry, Coco, and Seaberry, the trio, discover an underwater castle. Blueberry and Rainbow, the pair, miss this because they're too focused on gathering sand dollars. The trio decides to find their friends. The pair soon spots a pile of gold and starts to fight over it.
The trio arrives and sees their friends are being taken over by greed. Strawberry asks them to come back, saying they found a great place to play. The pair brushes her off, saying they don't have time for that since they've got gold to find. They swim away.
Suddenly, a group of Sea Sweeties appears, blocking their way. Their leader, whose words Seaberry can understand, gives a warning about the dangers ahead. She explains that some Sea Sweeties who got greedy for gold traveled down that path in search of treasure and were never seen again. However, the pair ignores the warning, thinking the fish are just trying to scare them so they can keep the treasure for themselves. They swim off, with the trio following closely behind.
As the pair descends deeper, their bags grow heavy from gathering gold sand dollars. Behind them, the trio spots a menacing fish and they try to warn their friends, but the pair mistakenly believes they're after the gold themselves.
The menacing fish trap the pair in nets and take them to their leader, a greedy sea serpent. She forces them to help her collect a huge pile of gold she has collected for years. She laughs evilly, but her laughter grabs the attention of a trio of friends who swim off to investigate.
The trio finds the pair trapped and collecting gold for the serpent. "This is horrible! We have to help them!" Seaberry exclaims. When Coco tries to rush in, Strawberry stops her and points out that they don't stand a chance against the big fish. So she suggest that they need a plan. Meanwhile, the imprisoned pair finally realizes that treasure isn't so great when they work for somebody else. Just then, Strawberry quietly appears and tells them she has an idea. She explains that she needs some of the sand dollars. She, Seaberry, and Coco create a trail of sand dollars to distract the sea serpent. When the serpent sees it, Blueberry and Rainbow will have a chance to escape.
Upon seeing the gold, the sea serpent wonders how Blueberry and Rainbow could have missed it. Just then, one of the fish spots Strawberry's tail and warns the sea serpent, who asks, "How's that?" "Uh-oh!" exclaims Strawberry as she pops out from behind the rocks. The sea serpent spots her and orders two striped fish to go after her. Strawberry acts as bait, leading them to a cave where the sea serpent waits outside. She counts to three, and the others trap the fish in the cave by pushing rocks over the entrance. The sea serpent, shocked, cries, "Great schools of squid!" and jumps out of the way in fright.
As Strawberry and the girls celebrate their victory, a seaquake occurs, causing the serpent's gold to fall into lava. The serpent dives in after it but can't get out. The mermaids quickly form a chain to help her. After some hesitation, the serpent chooses her own life over the gold.
Later, a troubled serpent is comforted by Blueberry and Rainbow. They have learned that their addiction to sand dollars harmed their friendship and made them miserable. The serpent also regrets her greediness, and the mermaids forgive her.
The striped fish are freed from the cave and, with unsettling grins, agree to be nice from now on (though their sincerity is questionable). The Sea Sweetie informs them of more sand dollars, and the mermaids and serpent agree to collect them. A second musical number emphasizes that true friendship is more valuable than treasure.
Back in reality, Blueberry and Rainbow decide to throw away their sand dollars. The story ends with the girls running across the beach at sunset.
