Strawberry Shortcake Wiki

Between 1979 and 1985, Kenner produced the original line of character dolls in the US, licensed by American Greetings. All dolls are scented with the fruit or food they are named after, unless otherwise noted.

Just about every doll on this page has been reproduced by at least one company. Altaya is the most prolific, releasing a series of dolls and accompanying booklets that were distributed in many countries including France, Belgium, Spain, Brazil, and Argentina. In a few cases, they produced dolls with unique outfits (e.g. "Berrykin" versions of Blueberry Muffin and Angel Cake) or dolls that did not previously exist (e.g. Boy Plum Puddin' and T.N. Honey). They also released versions of the Sweet Sleeper dolls without the eye closing feature. You can find photos of these reproductions, as well as those by other companies, in the Gallery.

1979[]

The first release included 5-inch Strawberry Shortcake and two same-sized friends, one baby doll, and the villain Purple Pieman. The baby Apple Dumplin’ and the Purple Pieman were the only dolls that included pets. Apart from the Purple Pieman, all these dolls have flat hands. Apple Dumplin' and the other baby dolls would retain these, while the 5-inch dolls would switch to curved hands.

Party Pleasers[]

These dolls wear party dresses with lace-trimmed skirts and/or hats. Each pet wears a party hat and features a gift box or related item. This series saw the debut of Plum Puddin' as a doll, although the original character in the American Greetings illustrations and early cartoons was a boy! The other new introduction was Peach Blush.

These dolls had eyes that could close and came with fruit-shaped sleeping bags. The pets wear stocking caps and are depicted with eyes closed. Instructions on the box recommended that parents remove the plastic window material to allow the box to be used as a "bedroom" for the doll.

Berrykins[]

This is the last series of Strawberry Shortcake dolls that Kenner produced. Instead of a pet, each 5-inch doll came with a cherub-like Berrykin. Each Berrykin carries a "purse" containing a perfumed solid. Plum Puddin’ and Peach Blush continued on from the previous series, and Banana Twirl was introduced. The Berry Princess is an 11 1/2 inch (Barbie-sized) doll with pockets in her skirt to hold the Berrykins.
