"He was the owner of the Berryworks when it was still a cupcake factory!" -- Blueberry Muffin reveals that J. Quincy Cupcake was the owner of a cupcake factory at the Berryworks prior to his death. "I've tried to meet him for years!" -- Blueberry Muffin mentions having tried and failed to met J. Quincy for years.

J. Quincy Cupcake is a deceased character from Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City. He is the founder of the Berryworks, and Big Apple City itself. A statue of him was placed outside of the Berryworks, and can be seen in many episodes.

Biography[]

J. Quincy and his wife Henrietta Cupcake, inspired by her cupcake recipes, decided to open a cupcake factory together. They built the factory in an apple orchard, and ran the business together. The orchard eventually expanded and grew into the small town of Apple Grove, and would continue to grow into the metropolis of Big Apple City. According to Blueberry, the apple trees were originally planted by magical "Berry Guardians", and it was a flock of "Tutti Frutti Toucans" from the "Forbidden Fruitlands" that flew to the couple and inspired Henrietta's cupcake recipes. (A Berryworks Mystery)

J. Quincy built his office in the cupcake factory behind a painting of him and his wife, accessed by a hidden lever in his whisking hand. He outfitted the office with several traps in the event a thief tried to steal any of their recipes. J. Quincy hid all of his recipes within a crystal cupcake, that could only be accessed by a true baker like him. (The Legend of the Crystal Cupcake)

J. Quincy's perfectionism led him to painstakingly check every cupcake he produced for any imperfection or blemish, which drove him mad. Somehow, this would end up leading to his death. A rumor eventually began to spread, claiming his spirit wandered the Berryworks to judge the baking of anyone working late. (Ghost of Cupcakes Past)

After his (and presumably Henrietta's) death, the cupcake factory was converted into the Big Apple Berryworks. A statue of J. Quincy Cupcake was placed outside the Berryworks in his honor. The Berryworks would go on to become a popular tourist destination, with shops, cafes, restaurants, and a VIP greenhouse area. (Berryworks Commercial)

Figgy Pudding would become the new owner of the Berryworks, and hire her son, Bread Pudding, as the manager of the location. (Figgy Pudding (episode))

Very briefly, the Berryworks had a "retro 80's" theme, though it was eventually changed back to the classic look before the events of the series. (LemonLime Back in Time)

In Ghost of Cupcakes Past, Blueberry Muffin would recount the tale surrounding J. Quincy's demise to Strawberry Shortcake, which inspired the Mean Berries to dress up as him to scare Strawberry into fleeing the Berryworks, though Blueberry's unintentional interference would foil their scheme.

In A Berryworks Mystery, Lime Chiffon would recount the history surrounding J. Quincy and the Berryworks to the rest of the Berry Besties, though Blueberry would interrupt with her own additions to the story. It is left ambiguous whether Blueberry was telling the truth regarding the Tutti Frutti Toucans and the Berry Guardians, or if she was simply being kooky.

In Spring Cleaning, J. Quincy's old office would be converted into a clubhouse hangout spot for the Berryworks employees.

In The Legend of the Crystal Cupcake, J. Quincy's hidden booby-trap in his former office gets triggered by the Berry Besties. Eventually, Strawberry Shortcake would figure out the trap is testing her baking talent, and manages to solve it. The Crystal Cupcake rose from the ground on a pillar, and be given to Strawberry, as she proved she was a true baker like J. Quincy Cupcake himself.

In Crabapple Jam (episode), renowned celebrity baker Crabapple Jam became the new owner of the Berryworks.

In Trick AND TREAT, the tale of J. Quincy Cupcake would be used as part of the Berry Besties' prank on Cheese Strudel and Cherry Streusel, claiming his spirit had been angered by the twins' harmful pranks. Rasberry donned her J. Quincy costume once more to scare the twins, this time working successfully.

Personality[]

J. Quincy is described as a perfectionist. He checked every cupcake for the tiniest blemish. His personality after his job made him go mad is unknown

According to the "The Legend of the Crystal Cupcake" episode, it is revealed by Lime Chiffon from reading his diary that he is also very protective of his secret recipes to the point he booby-trapped his whole office to keep them hidden.

J. Quincy held many personal beliefs in what bakers should be, as he wrote in his journal that every baker should be confident in their skills. His booby-trapped office also served as a test for bakers to prove their talents, and if successful they would be given his Crystal Cupcake. The tale surrounding J. Quincy's death even claims he haunts the Berryworks to judge the baking of anyone working late.

Physical Appearance[]

J. Quincy was a portly man with a white haircut, handlebar mustache, and blue eyes. He wore a tuxedo along with a top hat and a monocle.

The Mean Berries costume consists of a long white trenchcoat, a monocle, fake mustache, and a top hat. Because the costume requires three berries to stand on top of one another, "J. Quincy" appears tall and lanky, and can barely stand still. His sleeves also cover his hands. Due to Raspberry acting as his head, "J. Quincy" ends up with a young face with a slight tan, and long, frizzled magenta hair.

Trivia[]

  • J. Quincy could be a reference to John Quincy Adams, the sixth President of the United States.
  • J. Quincy Cupcake is the first character to be confirmed deceased in Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City; however, his death occured off-screen. The Cakeanator 6 would be the second, malfunctioning and exploding after trying to comprehend love.
