Granola Crunch is a minor character in Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City, who made her debut in Granola Crunch. She is the lead (and only) gardener for the Lean-Green Garden.
General Information[]
Granola Crunch made her only appearance in "Granola Crunch", where she was campaigning against The Peculiar Purple Pieman's efforts to tear down the Lean-Green Garden and build a frozen pie warehouse. Strawberry Shortcake approached her and offered to help save her garden by turning it into a place that helps the community, which would stop Pieman's plans, which Granola gladly accepted. However, when Strawberry and friends actually tried to help, Granola immediately began micro-managing their work and taking over. Strawberry pointed out to Granola that for the Garden to be a service to the community, she has to let the community actually help, to which Granola explained she wanted everything done the right way and didn't want to risk a berry messing things up. Strawberry tells Granola that she learned how to bake from other berries helping her, so Granola could teach those berries how to do things rather than doing everything herself. Granola accepts, and shows the Berry Besties her methods, while also letting them contribute in their own ways. By the end, everyberry across the city has pitched in and turned the garden into a thriving community spot, which Granola admits is nicer than before. She was last seen tending to some plants in the Lean-Green Community Garden.
Appearance[]
Granola Crunch is a teenage Asian girl with green eyes. She has a fair complexion with a slight tan. Her hair is in long, black twin braids, with her bangs completely obscured by her bandana.
Granola wears a green bandana on her head tied at the back, a beige t-shirt with a green collar and hems, and a graphic of a globe surrounded by two golden laurels on the front. She wears jean-shorts that end just above her knees, and were seemingly self-made by cutting the pant legs, as they have a ruffled hem. She also wears white socks with light-brown sandals.
Personality[]
Granola Crunch is an optimistic girl who loves caring for the Lean-Green Garden. It's implied part of her love of gardening comes from her environmentalism, as she doesn't like when berries do things that aren't eco-friendly, like tossing leaves into the trash rather than compost, or using electric machines rather than hand-powered tools.
She shows a very micro-managing side to herself when the Berry Besties try to help clean up the garden, actively stopping them because they weren't following the methods she uses. Her campaigning against Pieman's pie facility also made berries hesitant to support her with how intense she was. It's implied these reasons are why she was the only gardener for the Lean-Green Garden, as her behavior only pushed berries away from helping her. When Strawberry encourages her to let other berries help, Granola manages to drop this closed-off mentality.
Relationships[]
Strawberry Shortcake and her friends[]
She and Strawberry Shortcake are on good terms, as Strawberry Shortcake, on top of being an opponent of the Peculiar Purple Pieman already, is in full support of saving the garden when she hears about the issue. While her relationships with the rest of the Berry Besties has a rocky start owing to Granola's micro-managing, it gets better once she eases up and lets other berries help in their own ways rather than sticking to just what Granola wants to do.
The Purple Pieman[]
Because the Peculiar Purple Pieman wanted to destroy the Lean-Green Garden to make way for his pie storage facility, Granola Crunch naturally despises him and actively campaigns against his plans.
Trivia[]
- Etymology: Granola Crunch takes her name from the granola crunch snack, which is commonly associated with environmental activists.
- The inspiration for Granola Crunch came about due to showrunner Michael Vogel and writer Shannon McClung wanting a character who would oppose the Purple Pieman but wasn't part of the main cast.[1]
