Strawberry Shortcake Wiki

Huckleberry Pie is a prominent male character from the Strawberry Shortcake franchise. In a majority of the series he appears in, he's usually the only male character in the main cast.

General Information[]

1980s[]

Huckleberry is a lazy fisherman and one of Strawberry Shortcake's friends from Strawberryland, debuting in the very first special "The World of Strawberry Shortcake", and making several appearances in future specials. He's often seen interacting with Blueberry Muffin and Raspberry Tart, along with his puppy Pupcake. He's often seen napping or fishing and takes inspirations from Huckleberry Finn.

Interestingly, he was originally not meant to be the only male character in the specials, as Plum Puddin' was also a boy in "The World of Strawberry Shortcake". However, Plum ended up being changed into a girl around "Strawberry Shortcake and the Baby Without a Name", leaving Huckleberry as the only boy among Strawberry's friends.

2003[]

Huckleberry Pie is one of Strawberry Shortcake's friends, who lives in a childish fort in a brambly forest near Strawberry Shortcake's house. He is an avid skateboarder. He typically opts out of many activities the girls do unless they are sports-related. In the 1980's series, he was the original owner of Pupcake. Because his original pet, Pupcake, became Strawberry's in the 2003 series, he got a new pet, a frog named Shoofly. Besides skateboarding, the only other hobby he has shown interest in is magic tricks.

Berry Bitty Adventures[]

Huck was not originally a part of the main cast in the series, and it wouldn't be until Season 3, Episode 1, "A Boy and his Dogs", when he would finally make his debut. In the episode, he wound up in Berry Bitty City after his Pup-Mobile, a mobile dog shelter, broke down nearby. He ended up befriending the other girls and let them adopt the dogs he was transporting at the time, though he ended up keeping one, Tom-Tom as his own.

Unlike the others, he doesn't permanently live in Berry Bitty City, but he does often drive by for a visit. He plans to open a place called "Huckleberry's Home For Pets". Huckleberry Pie is the only boy on the show, though this doesn't mean the girls plan to treat him any differently. With the desire to be loved by all, Huckleberry tends to claim to be into the same things they are, so that he'll be liked. After he and Blueberry Muffin make a promise, he begins to act like his true self soon after.

Huck had much less prominence in Season 4, only appearing once in the second-to-last episode, "Doggie Dance No-Show", though he would continue to appear in the IDW comics that continued on from the show.

Berry in the Big City[]

Huckleberry Pie once again returned for "Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City". Huck is a friendly, if dense, musician with a serious love of pastries, and a lack of table manners.

Huck first appeared in the theme song for the series, though wouldn't appear in the show itself until the thirteenth episode of Season 1, "Meet Huckleberry Pie". When Strawberry Shortcake got separated from Lime Chiffon in the Funnelcake subway system, he introduced himself and his pet ferret, Red Hot, to her. Huckleberry was a street musician who played in the Funnelcake system. He helped her navigate through the Funnelcake system with the song "Try Something New", eventually helping her reunite with Lime. Strawberry complimented his musical talent and invited him to play at the Berryworks, but Huck initially declined, saying he wants to play for all his loyal fans (a running gag in the episode, in which it cuts to an empty station). Strawberry gave him a cupcake as a thank-you, and left with Lime, though when Huckleberry (very messily) took a bite, he decided to go with Strawberry and Lime back to the Berryworks, saying he felt it was time to expand his musical horizons, though it was partially so he could still eat some of Strawberry's delicious baking.

Huckleberry began to work at the Berryworks, but initially didn't have a cart like the other Berryworks vendors until "Huck's New Job". Bread Pudding, annoyed at Huck's constant singing interrupting his work, discovered Huck didn't own a cart, citing a rule that all Berryworks vendors need a cart to continue working there as an excuse to fire him. The Berry Besties tried to keep him around by having him work at their carts, though he ended up messing up every given task no matter how simple. Strawberry eventually realized that Huck could get his own cart, and the girls built him the Huckleberry Pie Berryoke Wagon. Bread rehired Huck, as he's a huge Berryoke fan, and the two ended up on (slightly) better terms than before.

Huck appears throughout the series one of Strawberry's Berry Besties, often seen playing a song on his guitar, though his dense nature and often nonsensical way of thinking would cause some issues from episode to episode. Such as "Who Stole the Pies", where he ate all of Strawberry's pies, believing the sign "Hot pies, only heat when cool" was saying the pies were only allowed for cool people (aka, him). He's close friends with Blueberry Muffin, due to both having a similar "go with the flow" worldview, and would often be seen together, with Blueberry dancing to Huck's music. Huck would also be regularly paired up with Bread Pudding in episodes, where their contrasting personalities would provide the crux of the episodes' conflict.

Personality[]

1980[]

His personality in the 80s iteration is decently different from his other versions. He is a country-type boy, who likes taking it slow and is never in a rush for anything. He's lazy and rarely enthusiastic. He's often blunt or uninterested as well, speaking in a slow manner and not biting his tongue when it comes to his thoughts.

2003[]

With his backward ball cap and homemade skateboard, Huckleberry Pie is all boy. He lives in the middle of a scary, overgrown place called Huckleberry Briar. His house is a tree fort with lookout ports, skateboard ramps, and secret entrances. He loves going on adventures. He likes Strawberry and her other friends, too, and will often zoom over to visit them on his skateboard.
~ Description from the 2003 website

Huckleberry Pie is a sporty and adventurous boy who's not easily frightened. He knows his way around places well and likes spending a lot of time just exploring on his own, though is never away from his friends for long. It can be assumed that he keeps a similar personality as a teenager though we don't see as much of him.

Berry Bitty Adventures[]

Huck lives in Berry Big City where he is starting a dog shelter. He often takes pups on the road in his pet adoption van to help them get adopted all over the countryside. He is instantly liked by everyone in Berry Bitty City and ends up becoming best friends with Blueberry, with whom he shares a love of mysteries and mystery-writing.
~ Official Hub profile

A friendly, perky young boy with a lot of inexperience when it comes to befriending others. Huckleberry Pie tries very hard to get things done or be liked by others. While he does learn to just be himself, he can't help but try brand new things in hopes of making more friends or learning to bond. Due to his love of animals (mainly dogs) and his career in mind, it's implied he has an easier time just being himself with animals best, as well as possibly hinting that he grew up rather lonely.

Despite being surrounded by girls, Huckleberry doesn't seem to mind their girly activities and does/tries everything with a non-judgemental mind. He cares deeply for the berry bunch and is usually always in an upbeat mood. He also knows how to have a good time, even if he's kinda klutzy. While Huck may come off really goofy he takes very serious care of everything he holds close and he will do whatever he can to pay you back if you help him in any shape or form.

Berry in the Big City[]

Huckleberry Pie is a friendly and helpful boy, who always tries to help everyberry in any way he can. His debut episode has him accompany Strawberry across the entire Funnelcake subway system and encouraging her to give it a chance. Because of his friendliness, Huck has made many friends in the city who will occasionally give him baking ingredients as a thank-you for helping them.

Huck is incredibly dense and has an interesting worldview, often coming to strange and nonsensical conclusions. Such as when he believed wearing a costume would cause him to lose track of his own identity and sense of self, or when he ate several stacks of pies because he thought a sign saying "Hot pies, only eat when cool" meant the pies were only allowed for cool people. Huck has a very "go with the flow" type of outlook, which makes him get along with Blueberry very well, as she has a similar philosophy on life. His dense nature can cause frustration with his friends, despite their love for him, most often with Bread Pudding, whose no-nonsense and organized mind clashes with Huck's free-spirited tendencies.

Despite his strange way of thinking and lack of intelligence, Huck is very knowledgeable about Big Apple City, knowing of several popular events and locations in the city that can come in handy whenever his friends need something. The most prominent examples are when he guided Strawberry through the Funnelcake system, and when he introduced her to Fruitleg Alley, which got her access to many out-of-season fruits and powerful allies in Caramela Éclair and Caramel Tartufo.

Huck has Samhainophobia, a fear of Fright Fall, and he's almost always seen cowering, hiding, or trying not to panic around the holiday, as he finds it incredibly scary. Often he has to be helped through it by his friends, whether it be taking part in Fright Fall traditions to conquer his fears or by being told to focus on the fun parts of Fright Fall rather than the scary parts.

Despite his friendly and chill personality, Huck has been shown to be discouraged from something if repeated failures get in the way. In "Music in Our Hearts", Huckleberry explained that he tried to audition for popular music event Poachella every year, but something would always go wrong and prevent his auditioning, which made him come to the conclusion that it was him that was the issue and made him lose his confidence, until Strawberry managed to reinvigorate his spirits by having her and the Berry Besties sing alongside him.

Appearance[]

1980s[]

Huckleberry is a boy with a ragdoll-like appearance, with yarn-like hair, brown eyes, auburn hair, and pale skin with freckles. His eyes are brown. He wears overalls with striped cuffs, a bandana with the same striped pattern, and a straw farmer's hat with huckleberries pinned on. He has plain brown shoes.

2003[]

Huckleberry looks like a simple, average human boy. He has brown hair, light skin, and a backward baseball cap. He wears a button-up shirt, a green vest, and blue cargo pants, and blue sneakers.

In Season 4, Huck wears a turquoise t-shirt with a white stripe in the middle over a yellow-and-white striped long-sleeve shirt, a red front-facing baseball cap, blue cargo pants, and red sneakers.

2009[]

Huckleberry Pie wears a dark blue T-shirt, with blue colored huckleberries on it and green and white striped sleeves, a pair of pale tan khaki pants, and sneakers. He has peach skin, brown eyes, and brown spiky short hair.

2021[]

Huckleberry has dark skin, green eyes, and navy-blue hair. It is unclear what specific ethnicity he is, though it is possible he's Asian like his voice actor, Vincent Tong. He wears a green and navy plaid button-up short-sleeve shirt over a yellow t-shirt, blue jeans, and greenish-blue sneakers. He is often seen carrying a blue acoustic guitar.

In winter episodes, Huck wears his normal outfit, with the addition of a green-and-blue plaid winter coat with a fluffy white hood over a yellow turtleneck sweater, and a winter beanie with a huckleberry patch on it.

In summer episodes, Huck wears a slight-too-big greenish-blue t-shirt with a wavy patterned square on the chest, blue cargo shorts with a light-green belt, green slip-on shoes with a blue thunderbolt symbol on the sides, and yellow socks.

Relationships[]

Strawberry Shortcake[]

Strawberry is very close to Huckleberry, and is his second best friend. She always tries to include him in the fun, even if he is being stubborn. They sort of had a brother and sisterly relationship in the 80s and 2002. In the 2021 series, he first meets her in a subway and helps her around when she's lost. He loves her baking and is one of her biggest fans.

Blueberry Muffin[]

Blueberry is Huckleberry's good friend in many generations. In the 2003 series they were neighbors, living in the same woods. The book The Little Mermaid portrayed them as siblings in the book. They are almost always close friends, and are often seen spending time together. In "Berry in the Big City", the two get along very well due to sharing similar philosophies, and Blueberry can often be seen dancing to Huck's music.

Orange Blossom[]

In 2003, Huckleberry plays with Orange a lot. They both like sporty things like climbing trees. In some instances, he is seen hanging out with just her at her treehouse.

Angel Cake[]

Huckleberry and Angel Cake don't often interact unless it is in a group setting. They are mostly opposite personalities. Angel Cake is prim and proper, neat, and a perfectionist and Huckleberry is a messy, unorganized, rowdy boy. Angel Cake often gets annoyed by Huck and nags and fusses at him.

Ginger Snap[]

Ginger Snap is a best friend of Huckleberry's, she is tomboyish and they like a lot of the same games to play.

Peppermint Fizz[]

Huckleberry does not like Peppermint Fizz and doubts her ability to be a good friend even though she's trying to improve her social skills. He thinks she sucks at playing music and even makes a mean plan to sabotage her instruments!

Cherry Jam[]

Cherry Jam and Huckleberry were friends for a small amount of time, but then she was upset and mad at him for stealing her lucky charm! They made up, but they still don't interact often anymore, they aren't the best of friends.

In "Berry in the Big City", Huck is a fan of Cherry Jam and her band, and would try to audition to be the opening act for their performances at Poachella every year, though otherwise the two don't really know each other.

Bread Pudding[]

Bread Pudding initially tolerated Huckleberry when he first began working at the Berryworks, but over time became irritated with Huck's constant music playing, to the point where he exploiting a rule citing that all Berryworks vendors need a cart to work there just so he could kick him out. But once Huck got his own cart and mentioned it was a Berryoke wagon, Bread allowed him to stay, as he loves Berryoke. As the only two boys, they are often seen interacting in episodes where both appear. As shown in certain episodes like "Deliveryberries", Huckleberry's simple-mindedness and easily distracted nature causes Bread great irritation and distress as the two kept getting sidetracked while delivering pies to Caramel Tartufo, though the two boys generally get along well otherwise.

Caramela Éclair[]

Caramela is Huckleberry's friend in Fruitleg Alley, the two having met when he performed his music at the location. The two knew each other long before Huck met the Berry Besties, though they haven't interacted much. It is shown that Caramela knows Huck well enough to recognize his voice and he has access to Fruitleg Alley.

Pets[]

1980s[]

Pupcake 80s

Pupcake (1980s)

Huckleberry Pie's pet was Pupcake. He is a brown dog with green and white striped ears, tail and a patch on the right side of his body. His appearance, like the other pets, is similar to a stuffed animal as stitches cover his body and his ears seem to be made out of the same patterned fabric that is also Huckleberry's scarf. He has a brown patch sewn over one eye. He has a short tail.

Shoofly

In the Classic series, due to Pupcake now being Strawberry's pet dog, Huckleberry's pet was now a frog named Shoofly. Shoofly's name comes from a type of molasses crumble pie, and is possibly a pun on "Shoo, fly!" due to being a frog. Shoofly has green skin with blue spots, and wears a blue backwards baseball cap like his owner, along with a striped collar with a huckleberry-shaped tag.

Berry Bitty Adventures[]

Tom Tom

Tom-Tom

In Berry Bitty Adventures, Huck took care of many dogs, due to running a mobile dog shelter, though never actually owned one until his debut, "A Boy and his Dogs". Blueberry Muffin, and eventually Strawberry Shortcake initially adopted Tom-Tom the coonhound, though he kept disappearing. Near the end of the episode, they realized that Tom-Tom kept disappearing because he missed Huckleberry, and so the boy decided to adopt him as his own dog. Tom-Tom is a very playful and curious pooch. He acts as leader of the other puppiess, and seems to be the most behaved, mature, and smart. He wanders on his own most of the time to check on everyone, and it is because of him that everyone got the dog they were meant to have.

Tom-Tom's appearance is a deliberate reference to Pupcake's original design, as a reference to the fact Pupcake was originally Huckleberry's pet. As such, the two dogs share many design elements, like the brown fur, dark patch on the right eye, and the green-and-white striped ears. Tom-Tom wears a blue collar with a huckleberry-shaped tag that matches his owner's shirt emblem.

Berry in the Big City[]

Red Hot

Huck's pet is a ferret named Red Hot. Red Hot looks like a typical ferret, though with red fur on his eyes, upper body, and lower legs/tail, and white fur on his abdomen and head. Red Hot can often be seen dancing to Huck's music. He makes the least amount of appearances compared to the other Berryworks pets, and is often left out of pet-centric episodes entirely. In his debut episode, Red Hot was mistaken for a rat by Strawberry, and later Lime, though this joke never carries over to other episodes.

Trivia[]

General[]

  • Huckleberry Pie was, for the most part, the only boy character in a female-dominated franchise, and the only one to appear as such in every series.
  • Despite Pupcake originating as Huckleberry's pet dog, he has never come under the ownership of Huck ever since the 1980s series.

1980s[]

  • Huckleberry Pie was named after Mark Twain's literary creation "Huckleberry Finn". In addition, Huck bore more than a passing resemblance to Huckleberry Finn in the 1980s series, from his straw hat and overalls to his tendencies towards fishing and general laziness. As future series largely drop these traits in favor of portraying Huck as an average boy, the original meaning of his name is somewhat lost.
  • Huckleberry was not originally supposed to be the only boy among Strawberry's friends. According to Muriel Fahrion, the original character designer for Strawberry Shortcake,[1] Plum Puddin' was always supposed to be a boy and was intended to be the opposite to Huck's lazy personality, but was retconned into a girl after his toys underperformed in sales, leaving Huck the only boy.

2003[]

  • In the 2003 series, Huckleberry Pie had been voiced by Daniel Canfield for the first four episodes, before being replaced by James Street. Sadly, on July 4th, 2007, James Street would die in a skateboarding accident. Daniel Canfield was brought back to reprise the character for the rest of the series, though James Street remained credited for the rest of the series.

Berry Bitty Adventures[]

  • Huckleberry's pet dog in the 2009 series, Tom Tom, might be named after Tom Sawyer, another character created by Mark Twain.
  • Huck only makes one appearance in Season 4.
  • He's the only member of the main cast to not live in Berry Bitty City, instead commuting to it for visits, which might explain his rather low amount of appearances.

Berry in the Big City[]

  • Huck is the three-time winner of Big Apple City's annual pie-eating competition, which explains his messy way of eating.
  • Berry in the Big City is the first series where Huckleberry Pie is not the only male character in the main cast, as Bread Pudding was introduced in the series as a main character.
  • Huckleberry is the first of his incarnations to not be light-skinned, instead being dark-skinned, though it's unclear what specific ethnicity he is. It's possible he's Asian, like his voice actor Vincent Tong.
  • Huck is the only member of the main cast whose debut episode is also a song episode.
  • In the "Meet the Berries" short, it reveals Huck has no idea of what counts as currency, as he assumed that random pocket trash thrown in his money bowl while busking counted as money, which he later tried to use to pay Strawberry for scones. Apparently he would eventually learn what money actually is by the time of the episode "Traffic Jam", where he and Blueberry made tons of money by selling ice cream to drivers stuck in traffic.
  • Despite appearing in the theme song ever since the first episode, and even having a rap section in it, Huck would be the last of the main cast introduced, appearing in the thirteenth episode.
  • Huckleberry has a rap section in the extended versions of the theme song "She's Strawberry Shortcake" and the song "Berry Best Friends Forever".
  • Despite being a musician, Huckleberry Pie, along with Lemon Meringue, Bread Pudding, Sour Grapes, and Raspberry Tart, are the only members of the Berry Besties to not have a dedicated solo song, as they generally only sing in group songs or in a duet with Strawberry. Huck would get to lead some group songs, like "What's a Holiday Without You" and "Scaryoke".
