Crabapple Jam is the main antagonist of the third season of Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City, prior to her debut in her titular episode, she has been seen on billboards around the show. She, alongside Kiki Keylime and The Peculiar Purple Pie Man, are the three biggest names in baking.
After the Purple Pieman is kicked out of the Berryworks in Peculiar Purple Partner, she decides to become the new owner of it in Season 3, planning on using her status as the Berry Besties' boss to undermine them, and prevent the group from becoming successful and a potential threat to her business.
Biography[]
Sometime before the main events of the series, Crabapple had moved to Big Apple City from her home in the countryside to pursue a baking career, becoming one of the biggest celebrities in the city.
At some point, as revealed in "Kiki KeyLime's Favorite Things", she took in the Peculiar Purple Pieman as an apprentice, back when he was an idealistic young berry, teaching him how to bake. She corrupted him with her selfish ideals, teaching him to be sneaky and treacherous.
She hired Cheese Strudel and Cherry Streusel as her assistants at some point.
In "Crabapple Jam", Crabapple appears on Bite of The City as a guest judge, and announces that she's become the new owner of the Berryworks. Upon her arrival, she immediately places a ban on the Berryworks vendors selling their products to avoid any competition. However, Strawberry and friends rebel, and manage to skirt past her regulations by creating a dessert that combines all their specialties, without technically counting amongst the products Crabapple banned the vendors from selling. Crabapple, though angry, decides not to push it and revokes her ban.
In "Strawberry and the Gigantic Cake", Crabapple asks Strawberry Shortcake and Raspberry Tart to bake a giant cake for Banoffee's birthday party, telling them it will be hosted at the Berryworks. However, she secretly changes the location to the Cumin Time Museum of Modern Art without telling either of the bakers, planning on the two being either late with the cake, or accidentally destroying it to make them appear unreliable. When Strawberry and Raspberry finally arrive with what's left of the cake, Crabapple fakes concern about the small cake, until Orange, Lime, Blueberry, and Sour arrive with the rest of the cake, saving Strawberry and Raspberry from embarrassment. Crabapple, through gritted teeth, compliments the Berry Besties for their accomplishment.
Bread Pudding worries that Crabapple will fire him if there's no customers at the Berryworks in "Hot, Fresh and Trending"
In "Custard's Big Adventure", Crabapple asks Strawberry to bake ollalieberry crisps for a VIP party she's hosting, however she purposefully requests this when Strawberry is busy with customers so she can't leave her truck to get the necessary ingredients, planning on making Strawberry look incapable of doing a task. Luckily, Custard goes out and retrieves the ingredients for Strawberry, allowing her to bake the crisps in time. Crabapple grumbles as she takes the ollalieberry crisps away, wondering how Strawberry was able to bake them without leaving her truck.
In "Strawberry's Friendship Party", Crabapple Jam loads the Berryworks vendors with a ton of busywork, leaving them little time to hang out like usual. When Strawberry starts feeling down about being unable to spend time with her friends, Crabapple fakes sympathy, and tells Strawberry she can't become successful without giving up something, which makes Strawberry worry about giving up her friendships. At the end of the episode, Crabapple hears the Berry Besties partying, and delights in the prospect of penalizing them for goofing off, but is stunned at seeing that the Besties are having fun while doing their assignments together. Strawberry tells Crabapple that she's right in that success takes sacrifice, but that doesn't mean she has to give up her friendships. Strawberry then asks Crabapple to take a photo of the Berry Besties.
In "The Spec-taco-lar Pets", Crabapple bans the Berryworks pets after Cheese Strudel and Cherry Streusel blame them for making a mess in the Berryworks. She later hears the crowd of berries cheering on the pets as they perform the Barbacoa Bananza, but refuses to unban them because she's still convinced they made the mess. However, she then hears Cheese and Cherry failing to perform the dance, and sees them spilling the tacos everywhere, and realizes they're to blame. Crabapple negotiates with Strawberry, and allows the pets to stay. She drags Cheese and Cherry away to punish them for making a mess in the Berryworks.
In "Strawberry's Shortcake", Crabapple announces a new promotional event called "Sweet Yourself Day", where the Berryworks vendors create a sweet based on their namesake, and uses her crabapple jam as an example. At the end of the episode, Strawberry presents her "strawberry short cake", noting that it didn't have to specifically be the exact dessert, which the confused Crabapple accepts as "creative".
In "Kiki KeyLime's Favourite Things", When seeing Strawberry be offered to bake treats for Kiki KeyLime's Super Sweet New Years Eve Special, she discourages Strawberry from doing so by claiming everyberry will feel left out if she did so. After Strawberry reluctantly agrees, Crabapple tells Kiki that Strawberry decided to turn down the offer, and she starts giving away her apple cinnamon cookies. During the event, Crabapple promotes her new stand mixer product, which is given away to the attendees. Strawberry is angered at Crabapple's lying, and Purple Pieman remarks that she hasn't changed since he last saw her. He then reveals he was her apprentice in his younger days, and encourages Strawberry to stoop to their level, and humiliate Crabapple onstage. Strawberry realizes that she doesn't want to be that type of berry, and lets go of her anger, giving her cookies to the production crew, which end up being served to Kiki. Kiki immediately asks Strawberry to come onstage and wonders why Strawberry baked cookies when Crabapple told her she turned down the offer. Crabapple gets worried Strawberry will reveal the truth, but Strawberry decides to claim Crabapple reminded her that what mattered more was baking for her friends. Crabapple decides to roll with it to avoid being exposed as a liar.
In "Sky High Pie", Crabapple attempts to drive Strawberry and Raspberry apart, enlisting Cheese Strudel and Cherry Streusel to spread rumors between the two bakers. After Strawberry and Raspberry argue with each other and accidentally destroy the giant pie they planned on baking together, Crabapple uses the opportunity to give away her own dessert to the customers. Later, in The Berry Best Baker Competition, she once again pitted Strawberry and Raspberry against each other in a ruthless baking competition, but took notice when Strawberry discreetly helped Raspberry with a challenge she was struggling with. After that, she claimed it was a tie, but then told Strawberry in private that she was the winner, and questioned why she helped Raspberry at all, but was unamused when Strawberry revealed it was simply out of kindness.
In Bake The World A Better Place Part 1, she made an announcement that she would be restructuring the Berryworks into the Crabappleworks, and that Strawberry would personally work alongside her, much to everyberry’s shock. Later in the clubhouse, she fired all the Berry Besties on the spot, but initially kept Strawberry on. When Strawberry stood up to her, she simply fired the baker as well.
In Part 2, she held the grand reopening for the Crabappleworks, but this ended up not going to plan when everyberry was attracted to the Berry Besties’ makeshift food truck lot instead. She initially confronted them until Kiki asked why the Berry Besties weren’t in the facility. Cheese Strudel and Cherry Streusel then turned on Crabapple, revealing that she fired all of them. Crabapple immediately denied this, claiming that she was actually planning to move on from the Berryworks anyway, but noberry bought her excuse. Crabapple stormed away angrily, and the Berry Besties reclaimed the Berryworks, restoring it to its former glory.
Appearance[]
Crabapple Jam is a heavier set older woman with peach skin and gray hair in a large hairdo. She has three red circles in her hair which are either clips or color spots, it's hard to tell at this time. Her eyes are green and her dress is the same shade of green. The dress evokes a southern vibe with puffy sleeves, a round collar, a red apple pendent, and an apron. She wears darker green bracelets resembling leaves and red earrings as well. She also wears red high heels.
In the flashback from "Kiki KeyLime's Favourite Things", Crabapple's younger appearance is the exact same as her present day design, but with brown hair.
Personality[]
Crabapple presents herself as a sweet woman with a fun sense of humor, using country sayings regularly to sell her "sweet countryside grandma" appearance to the public. However, she is secretly a scheming and corrupt individual like the Pieman, willing to take advantage of people's kindness, manipulating situations to humiliate others, and generally attempting to undermine anyone she views as a threat to her business. She is also somewhat cynical, believing that friendship is a weakness, which ultimately contributed to her downfall in the Season 3 finale.
