"Those are my books and my costumes and stuff. I just love to dress up and put on plays. Don't you? And I absolutely love to read." -- Blueberry Muffin introduces her hobbies in The Blueberry Beast.

Blueberry Muffin is one of the main characters of Strawberry Shortcake. She is usually characterized as either being fairly silly and absent-minded, such as her original and Berry in the Big City incarnations, or as rather intelligent with a love of books, such as her 2003 and Berry Bitty Adventures incarnations.

General Information[]

1980s Series[]

Blueberry was introduced in the very first Strawberry Shortcake television special, The World of Strawberry Shortcake, as a silly and often forgetful friend of Strawberry Shortcake. While Blueberry appeared in a majority of the television specials, she rarely played a prominent role, though she would make bigger appearances in the books and comics of the 1980s. In the first special, Blueberry notably was the only one of Strawberry's friends who could understand Apple Dumplin's scribbled notes and communicate with her.

2003 Series[]

Blueberry Muffin is one of Strawberry Shortcakes' friends in this series as well, first appearing in "The Blueberry Beast" segment of Moonlight Mysteries. She lives past Huckleberry Briar in a wild blueberry field, where she found an old house and fixed it up. Unlike her original incarnation, this Blueberry is characterized as an intelligent bookworm with a love for reading and a big vocabulary. She also likes to dress-up, put on plays, and do mysteries. She has a tendency to be dramatic or jealous.

Berry Bitty Adventures[]

Blueberry Muffin is one of Strawberry Shortcake's best friends in Berry Bitty City. She works and lives at Blueberry Books in the city and keeps everything fully organized and in its proper place. Bosley Bookworm works for her as an assistant in her bookstore. Blueberry can usually be seen with a book, and has any types of books ranging from cookbooks to flower books to organization books. She is an avid fan of the Patty Persimmon mystery novels, and will occasionally try to emulate her. She usually has to act as a translator for Mr. Longface, as she's the only one who understands his rather complicated vocabulary.

Berry in the Big City[]

Blueberry Muffin in this generation harkens back to her original incarnation from the 1980s, characterized as a spiritual, spontaneous, and rather silly girl. She operates the Dreamery Creamery ice cream cart at the Berryworks in Big Apple City, where she makes and sells unique ice cream flavors. Blueberry's unique outlook on the world can often come into conflict with Lime Chiffon, who believes in solid facts over mysticism. Due to her spiritual and daydreamy personality, she considers herself a friend to all living beings, occasionally seen talking to plants or random animals she encounters. Blueberry believes the universe itself is her friend, and will guide her to her goals. In Following the Recipe, she reveals that she's dyslexic, explaining why she tends not to follow recipes. Blueberry has an encyclopedic knowledge of myths and legends in Big Apple City, such as the tale of Cinnamon Swirl or J. Quincy Cupcake's ghost, and will talk about them at the first opportunity she gets.

It is occasionally implied that she has magical powers in the series, or at the very least a connection to the supernatural. In "All in the Palm", she correctly predicts everything that happens to the other girls in the episode. In "Strawberry's Friendship Party" she tells Strawberry she cannot attend the party via a paper airplane note, yet somehow managed to take a bite out of one of the cupcakes. It is also left unclear whether or not the universe is really acting on her behalf, or if everything occurs by random luck.

Personality[]

1980s Series[]

Blueberry is a sweet and mature girl who enjoys dabbling in silliness. She is, however, a bit generic in this generation, being shown as friendly and agreeable to those around her. In the first animated special she's shown as silly, air-headed, and very forgetful "as of late". It is perhaps because of her silly personality that she can perfectly decipher Apple Dumplin's scribbles.

2003 Series[]

"Blueberry Muffin bakes the most delicious muffins in Strawberryland. Because she loves reading stories, her over-active imagination often runs away with her. She frequently exaggerates and uses big words and dramatic phrases. But she’s also a lot of fun and thinks up the best make-believe games. Blueberry’s muffin-shaped cabin is in Blueberry Valley, a peaceful place surrounded by wild blueberry bushes." - From the official 2003 website

Blueberry is a sweet, if reserved, girl who loves taking on projects and hosting events. She's an admirer of old houses and plays, and is shown as a creative and artsy child. She can have trouble expressing her feelings, though is still shown as a great friend who can be counted on.

Berry Bitty Adventures[]

Blueberry Muffin is one of Strawberry Shortcake's best friends. She is very smart and loves to read. Sometimes Blueberry Muffin forgets things, but she always remembers to be a true blue friend. Is there anything she loves more than books? Her friends! - From her Hub profile

Blueberry is normally the mature and smartest girl in the group. She is knowledgeable about almost everything. She spends so much time with books that she always knows exactly what others need, or where the specific topic they need will be located in her bookstore, Blueberry Books. She is a whole lot of knowledge and very well-mannered, which can confuse her friends since they struggle to understand her in some way. With her acute wit and flair for more than just average knowledge, Blueberry is a genius when it comes to organization, making plans, maps, and schedules, as long as it is not overly sophisticated.

She also has a surprising knowledge of trap-making and being a prankster. Mainly though, Blueberry is reserved, sweet, and soft-spoken. She tends to be thoughtful of others and is a caring friend, but in some ways, she forgets some things and may accidentally hurt someone's feelings or offend them. Blueberry does have some passive-aggressive and selfish tendencies. However, the moment she realizes she has to do something, she will attempt to fix it in her own way. Possibly because of her vast knowledge and above-average intelligence, Blueberry is not modest. Once in a while, she can act like a know-it-all and be just slightly greedy or impolite. Whenever something seems fake or unreal, she will go out of her way to prove it wrong, but only because she believes it's the best thing to do and she will stop if provided with enough evidence. She also has a habit of obsessing over things and usually cries whenever she's unhappy. Her bitterness has also come up many times during the series now and then, showing that Blueberry can be a bit mean when agitated. She also has a bit of clinginess in her and can get jealous kind of easily, easily being the rudest of the series before the introduction of Sour Grapes and Raisin Cane.

Despite all this, Blueberry will stand up for what is right and not back down. She doesn't lose sight of her morals and expresses her opinion often, and is almost always the first to admit her mistakes. She does not stand for mistreatment and does everything in her ability to make things right, and always tries to keep her friends in line. Blueberry brings her sense and level-headedness to the group and really cares for her friends. That love for her friends helps her to be humble and modest later on and tells her that her friends mean more than anything to her. However, Blueberry is more kid-friendly and fun and likes to read stories to the Berrykins. Later on in the series, she is mostly modest and very kind, friendly, and polite.

Berry in the Big City[]

Blueberry Muffin is totally, BoHo chic! A relaxed and calming of friend to Strawberry Shortcake. With her pet mouse, Cheesecake they are always there to share peaceful, feelings of zen." - From the Berry in the Big City website

Blueberry Muffin is now a rather silly individual who loves all things spiritual and unique in their own rights. Despite her soft voice is very energetic and spontaneous. She is a daydreamer, foolish, and often spaced out, but she is surprisingly intelligent and can figure out clever solutions to most situations in her own special way. Blueberry is extremely creative and has a very "go with the flow" type of worldview, a combination which can often lead to her doing weird things such as putting vegetables or spices in ice cream, painting by using her face, or believing she can hear plants and objects talk. She considers the universe itself as a friend, and believes everything that happens is the universe guiding her. While she can be seen as weird or foolish, her psychic outlook on the world often proves to not be entirely unfounded, as she seems to have an extraordinary amount of luck, whether by chance or fate.

Despite her serene and bubbly attitude, Blueberry does have some less-than-peaceful parts of her buried beneath the surface. Despite her ideals of a calm and composed body and mind, she can be seen becoming irritated and furious when around her brother, Everything Bagel, who is the only berry that can genuinely make her angry. In "Following the Recipe", Blueberry admitted that she was ashamed and embarrassed of her dyslexia, which is why she never told anyberry about it, and preferred to go with her instincts rather than try to read recipes. However, when Strawberry comforted her and helped her see she shouldn't be ashamed of it, Blueberry appears to have gotten over this insecurity, though she still prefers going with the flow.

Appearance[]

1980s Series[]

Much like most characters in this incarnation, Blueberry has freckles and a doll-like face. She has a pigtailed hairstyle with bangs and her hair is pastel blue. She wears a blue top hat, a long-sleeved short dress, green striped stockings, and blue loafers. Her dress has a checkered pattern in artwork and her hat has blueberry decorations, along with a ribbon tying it to her head. She is often pictured with a blueberry basket as well.

1991[]

Blueberry's generation is shown in a few different ways. Her color palette is similar to the 1980s, this time just more variety in shades of blue. She has fair skin, light blue hair tied in twin ponytails held with blueberry hairclips, a squarish head, light blue eyes, a round nose, and freckles on her cheeks and between her eyes. Her first outfit most often shown is a diamond checkered-printed light blue dress with deep blue sleeves and a matching headscarf, decorated with a light color and folded sleeve pieces making the sleeves resemble berries, green and white striped socks, and blue loafers with purple shoelaces. She has a second outfit that's similar but with much deeper blues, and is a solid blue dress with an apron and blueberry purse. She has a nighttime outfit complete with blue fluffy slippers, a checkered nightgown with white ruffles, and her hair braided with a ribbon matching the gown. She appears to wear pants or tights as well. Her last outfit is overalls with the same pattern as her other clothes on the chest, a blue and purple bucket hat, and a blue medium-sleeved shirt. The shoes of her last outfit are unknown, as they are obscured by her boat in the image where her outfit appears in.

2003 Series[]

Blueberry Muffin is a fair-skinned girl with long, curly natural brunette hair. She has azure blue eyes. She wears a long-sleeved light blue blouse with the top half divided by a lavender ribbon, the top fabric is pastel blue with lighter polka dots with that pattern also on the cuffs. She wears regular boot-cut jeans with pastel blue buttons on the bottom. She wears lavender Mary Janes with white socks. Her signature hat is an oversized newsboy cap that is dark blue with lighter polka dots. Her hat has a large plastic blueberry button on top. In 2007, when she is a teenager, she appears to have dyed her hair a pastel blue like in the 1980s, but this hair color mostly appears in books and official art.

Her mermaid form has a royal blue tail with very pastel blue fins. She wears a white asymmetrical midriff top with a light blue ruffle. She cares about a pouch strap bag with the same fabric as her hat. Her swimsuit looks the same as her usual shirt but is a one-piece.

Her winter outfit appears to be very similar to the 2009 one, a pastel blue coat with white fur trim. She also has a cowgirl outfit, which is the same chaps and vest as everyone else but in themes of blue shades, light green, and burgundy. On more than one occasion, she dresses up as a cowgirl, she seems to like this Western theme.

She has many other princess-themed dresses but most are blue. Her tea party dress is a line with a small section being light blue and the rest of the skirt is white with pastel blue polka dots. She also wears flowers in her hair for the tea party.

Berry Bitty Adventures[]

Blueberry has long, straight blue hair that is swept with straight bangs to the left of her face and the rest of her hair is pulled back with a purple and blue knitted headband with a sapphire orb resembling a blueberry on the right side of it. Her lipgloss is a pastel pink-lavender color. Blueberry Muffin's color theme consists of darker shades of blue, bright green, and purple.

Her usual outfit consists of a purple and blue weaved headband with a sapphire orb resembling a blueberry, a pastel blue ruffle-lining shirt with dark blue spots underneath a blue cardigan held together at the chest with a small blueberry-shaped button, a blue miniskirt with a purple belt part at the top, green striped tights and blue loafers resembling her headband.

In one of the books, Blueberry can be seen wearing a dress resembling Strawberry's alternate outfit. A dark blue shirt with a sapphire gem on the top over a pastel blue shirt with dark blue spots, a lavender ruffle skirt, and the usual headband with the same stockings and shoes. For formal events, she can be seen in a pastel blue dress with a dark blue jacket-like top over it and a purple headband with more sapphire gems on it.

For winter, Blueberry's typical outfit consists of a dark blue coat with pastel fur trim at the neck, the bottom of her coat, and the ends of her sleeves. She also has lavender mittens, her usual stockings, and dark blue winter boots with blue fur trim on top.

Berry in the Big City[]

Blueberry is an East Asian girl with dark blue hair tied into a very big bun, flat bangs, and twin hair strands on each side of her face. She has light skin, a small nose, and blue-grey eyes. She wears a long-sleeved sweater-like blue dress with a blueberry-shaped button on the front, a dark blue choker, light purple leggings, and brown boots. Her hair tie is light blue with a light pink flower attached.

In summer episodes, Blueberry wears a plain, sleeveless blue summer dress with a blueberry emblem in the center, purple shorts, a thin light blue vest, and brown sandals.

In winter episodes, Blueberry wears a fluffy, blueberry-polka-dotted winter dress, blue winter coat with fur cuffs, blue earmuffs, purple leggings, and brown winter boots.

In sleepover episodes, Blueberry wears a white tank top undernearth her blue pajamas with a light gray cloud pouring dark blue dots on the middle, purple pants, and light blue slippers with two blueberries.

Pets[]

1980s Series[]

Cheesecake (1980s)

Blueberry Muffin's pet was a mouse named Cheesecake. She, like many other pets, looked similar to a stuffed animal. Cheesecake had primarily yellow fur, with a dark blue tuft of fur on her head, and a dark blue snout shaped like a flower. Her inner ears had a blue checkerboard pattern. Cheesecake wore a blue checkerboard-patterned apron.

2003 Series[]

Cheesecake was once again Blueberry Muffin's pet mouse. Cheesecake now had primarily blue fur, with pink inner ears. She wore a navy blue bandana with purple polka-dots .

Blueberry also had a filly companion in Blueberry Sundae, who's vain about her strikingly beautiful appearance and will stop in her tracks to admire her reflection whenever she encounters it. Notably, Sundae appeared in the cartoon before Blueberry first-introduced.

Berry Bitty Adventures[]

Scouty2

Scouty

Blueberry Muffin initially didn't have a pet in the series until Season 3, in the episode "A Boy and his Dogs". She initially adopted a yellow cocker spaniel named Henna, however the two were incompatible as Henna was very easily frightened and disliked the "fun tests" Blueberry tried to set up for her. Blueberry decided to give Henna to Lemon Meringue, and received Scouty the border collie from Plum Pudding. The two got along much better, as Scouty enjoyed playing and the training tests Blueberry would set up for him. Scouty would remain Blueberry's pet dog for the rest of the series.

Berry in the Big City[]

2021cheesecakemouse

Cheesecake (2021)

Cheesecake returned as Blueberry Muffin's pet mouse, retaining many design elements from her past 2003 incarnation, being blue with pink ears. Cheesecake's ears are much larger, and the fur around her eyes is a brighter shade of blue. Cheesecake wears a very small headband with a flower that matches her owner, and a very small turquoise collar with a blueberry-shaped tag rather than a bandana. Cheesecake acts as a miniature assistant to Blueberry, often seen with a very small clipboard and having to try to deal with her owner's eccentricity, which she's long gotten used to, though still finds it tiring. Cheesecake is just as much a leader as Custard, and will take charge if Custard is unable to. She runs an underground poker game for the other Berryworks pets (she counts the cards).

Trivia[]

General[]

  • In the 1980s series and Berry Bitty Adventures, she is vulnerable to rambling and acts as a translator for other characters, most notably Apple Dumplin' (1980s) and Mr. Longface (BBA).
    • Her Berry in the Big City incarnation also serves as a translator of sorts regarding plants and animals, but since the series is more "realistic" (at least, early on) it is usually played off like Blueberry is just acting silly, though it is hinted numerous times that she can legitimately talk to nature.
  • Blueberry Muffin and Huckleberry Pie are often associated with each other in the franchise, with many series portraying them as being close friends. This is likely because of blueberries and huckleberries being very similar fruits.

2003 Series[]

  • Her catchphrase is: "Absoluuu-ootely!"
  • She seems to like the idea of being a cowgirl and in many costume events has a cowgirl hat.
  • She is the only incarnation of the character to have brown hair rather than blue, though she has pastel blue hair in some later books and merch of the 2003 series. It is exclusive to merchandise though, as her design remains unchanged in Season 4.
  • In the Playmates Toys era, her dolls were given two secondary themes. The first is wildflowers for the Berries to Blossoms line, and the second is lollipops for the Candy Pops line.

Berry Bitty Adventures[]

  • She can play the tambourine and clarinet.
  • She leads a fan club for Cherry Jam.
  • Several episodes have her display poor behavior such as being selfish, rude, snippy and jealous, and often has to learn a lesson about being nicer. This makes her similar to Angel Cake in the 2003 series, who developed a more jerkish personality that she needed to be humbled with time and again.
  • Blueberry's favorite book series is the Patty Persimmon's detective series.
  • She often appears more book-smart than other categories of intelligence, often lacking what some would consider common sense.

Berry in the Big City[]

  • This is the first incarnation of Blueberry to not be white, and she is instead an East Asian girl. While her specific ethnicity is unclear, her voice actress is of Chinese descent.
  • She makes very odd and random flavors in her ice cream cart, the Dreamery Creamery. Notable flavors include:
    • WHAT - from "Meet The Berries". It stands for "wasabi, hazelnut, almond, toffee"
    • WOW - also from "Meet The Berries", it stands for "watermelon, olive, walnut"
    • Raindrop Raisin Drizzle - from "Berry in the Big City Part 1", it is made with raisins and the taste of how a forest smells after rainfall
    • Camembert Campfire Crunch - from "Blueberry Brainfreeze, it is made with cheese, marshmallows, and smoke. Blueberry described it as the perfect mix of sweet and savory flavors. Strawberry found the flavor revolting.
    • Poppin' Papaya - from "Foam Alone", it is papaya ice cream with "firework flakes" (likely the equivalent of Pop Rocks)
    • Boiled Cabbage & Marshmallow Cone - from "Parking Problems", it is pretty self-explanatory. Blueberry admits it's an acquired taste.
    • An unnamed ice cream from "Figgy Pudding", consisting of a brown and purple twist sandwiched between two waffle cones, with jalapenos, cheese, wrapped candy, and a PB&J sandwich as toppings.
    • Fennel Pollen & Peppermint, and Garlic Salt & Bubblegum - from "Following The Recipe". Blueberry found the first flavor off-putting, but loved the second flavor.
  • She is into auras and dance, in fact, her dancing and Huckleberry's music are the things to distract and calm down Honeydew Sorbet in "Adventures of Berrysitting".
  • She dislikes carving pumpkins as shown in "Save the Pumpkins". She doesn't like hurting any plants, in fact, as she is able to speak to them in her own words.
    • According to herself, she's fluent in "sweet potato".
    • The one exception to her love of plants are roses, as revealed in Strawberry Shortcake's Spring Spectacular. Blueberry claims they have a superiority complex over other flowers. This slightly contradicts A Berry Perfect Kind of Day, where Blueberry was seen smelling a rose, though she does toss it on the ground after she joins her friends on their commute.
  • Blueberry is the first instance of a character having a learning disability, as she is dyslexic.
    • Blueberry is also one of the few examples of a disabled character in the series, such as Lime Chiffon, who is visually impaired and cannot see without her glasses. There is also a background character who is physically disabled and uses a wheelchair.
  • A series-long running gag involves implying that Blueberry has a connection to the supernatural..
    • In All in the Palm, she correctly predicted everything that happened to the other girls with her unique way of palm-reading. (Book = Lime wins Poppy Corn's book, Boom = Lemon's invention explodes, Gold = Orange gets splashed with gold paint, and Stop = Strawberry stops doubting herself).
    • In "Scaryoke", Blueberry seemingly levitates a sheet onto her ice cream cart while decorating for Fright Fall.
    • In "Strawberry's Friendship Party", she tells Strawberry she can't attend said party via a paper airplane, but then tells her that the cupcakes she baked were delicious, as she somehow managed to take a bite out of one of the cupcakes despite never being at the party.
    • In "The House on Scary Berry Lane", she instantly appears next to Strawberry and Raspberry in a flash of lightning.
    • She is able to directly communicate with animals as demonstrated in "Glamping vs Camping", where she convinced a swarm of bugs to leave her alone by asking nicely, and in The Golden Berry Competition, she held an "interesting conversation" with a pigeon.
    • In Strawberry Shortcake's Spring Spectacular, she is able to communicate with the monstrous vines, seemingly confirming that her ability to talk to plants is a genuine skill, while past episodes depicting her communicating with plants left it up in the air if she could do it.
    • It is implied the universe itself acts on her behalf, but the episodes leave it ambiguous if this is actually the case, or Blueberry just happens to be extremely lucky.
