Strawberry Shortcake Wiki

Berry Birds are recurring antagonists from the Strawberry Shortcake series, sometimes referred to as crows. They serve The Peculiar Purple Pieman of Porcupine Peak as his feathered minions. The lead bird of the flock is named Captain Cackle.

General Information[]

1980s[]

The Berry Birds are minions of the Peculiar Purple Pieman of Porcupine Peak, who at the Pieman's command, steal berries that the Pieman could use to bake his pies. They often work to spoil Strawberry Shortcake's plans and spy on her, repeating her words to Pieman.

2003[]

In the 2003 series they're often referred to as crows and are said to eat fairies. They serve Pieman as his minions once more.

Berry Bitty Adventures[]

Like the Peculiar Purple Pieman, the Berry Birds did not appear in the cartoon. However, they would return alongside their master in the IDW Comics. They serve Steve Piemanne (the Purple Pieman) as his minions, and can occasionally be seen in his cafe at Porcupine Peak. Their biggest role comes in the final issue, when Steve sends them to destroy the squashes Strawberry needed to complete her objective in the Grubby Grub race. However, Berrykin Bloom’s cousin noticed and helped out Strawberry by scaring off the Birds with scarecrows, allowing Strawberry to complete the round.

Berry in the Big City[]

In 2021 one has made a return as an aid to Pieman and later a friend of Sour Grapes.

Appearance[]

Berry Birds are purple, crow-like birds, having orange beaks in the 1980 series and dark purple beaks in the 2003 series. They also changed size in between generations. They were originally depicted as 75% the size of Strawberry Shortcake's head, but in the the 2003 series, they are merely as big as her hands.

Berry in the Big City[]

Only one has appeared, and it is a much lighter purple with a light purple beak and stylized shape similar to the other pets of the series.

Trivia[]

  • In Strawberry Shortcake: The Sweet Dreams Movie, the Berry Birds seem to have decent speech capabilities, though their speech is broken and sounds like bird squawks.
  • In the 1980s they're shown to be able to copy any speech, similar to parrots and real life crows who can learn words after hearing them so many times.
  • The main bird of Pieman's flock is named "Captain Cackle"
  • They are said to eat every berry in a piece of land, not stopping until every single Berry is gone.
