A Berryworks Mystery is the 19th episode of the first season of Strawberry Shortcake: Berry In The Big City. It premieres on January 8th, 2022.
Summary[]
While on a search with her friends to find their missing pets, Strawberry Shortcake hears about the legend of The Berryworks.
Plot[]
Strawberry Shortcake takes out a tray from the oven as she sings and dances to herself, calling out her cat, Custard, as her "trusty sous chef". Strawberry then realizes that Custard is not in the truck, she looks around but is unable to find her. Strawberry falls to her knees and yells Custard's name, catching the attention of her friends, who all run towards Strawberry and ask her what happened. Blueberry then yells "caramel popcorn", as she explains she yells the names of foods when she's hungry too, much to the confusion of her friends. Strawberry explains that Custard wandered off and she can't find her, which makes her a terrible person and a worse cat mom as she slides down to the floor. Orange Blossom mentions that her dog, Pupcake, always disappears and she thinks he does laps around the building, Lime Chiffon thinks her bird, Parfait, eavesdrops. Lemon Meringue says that her frog, Frappe, leaves all the time whenever she gets too chatty, as it cuts to a flashback where Lemon simply says "sup" to Frappe, and the frog hops away. Blueberry says that her mouse, Cheesecake, runs an underground poker game for the other animals and that she counts the cards.
Cutaway: Lime sarcastically says that Blueberry is very creative... with her "facts", as she makes them all up.
Strawberry asks the girls if none of them know where their pets are. The four girls realize this, and start shouting their pets' names in an attempt to find them. Orange assures Strawberry that they will find their pets together. Lime tells everyberry that she'll lead the pet rescue, as she has studied every inch of the Berryworks.
The girls wander inside an unfamiliar part of the Berryworks, Strawberry asks Lime if she's sure the pets went here, while Orange asks where they even are. Lime explains to them that they're in the old storage rooms of the Berryworks, which were built back when the Berryworks was still a cupcake factory. Lime continues, explaining that the Berryworks was built in an apple orchard, and its success led to the founding of the small town known as Apple Grove, which expanded further into Big Apple City. She shines her flashlight against her fingers, doing shadow puppets as a visual aid, until Blueberry interrupts by saying that the apple trees were originally planted by a magical Berry Guardian, who sprinkled the enchanted seeds from the clouds, and tells the girls that it's a true story.
Cutaway: Lime says it's not true.
The girls continue walking around the Berryworks storage rooms until they hear Custard meowing. They run towards where they heard her, and end up running face-first into a painting. Lime takes her flashlight and it reveals a woman's face in front of them. The girls scream (except for Lemon, who is unfazed). The flashlight moves to show a man's face and the girls scream again. The flashlight moves between the faces as the girls keep screaming until Lime drops her flashlight and it illuminates the full painting. It turns out that the faces they saw were part of a painting of J. Quincy Cupcake and his wife Henrietta Cupcake. Lime explains that Henrietta's recipes were what inspired J. Quincy to start his cupcake business. Blueberry interrupts Lime again, and says that a flock of Tutti Frutti Toucans from the Forbidden Fruitlands were what inspired Henrietta's recipes.
Cutaway: Lime Chiffon reiterates that Blueberry's "fact" is not true.
Lime tells Blueberry that Tutti Frutti toucans are not an actual breed of bird. Blueberry agrees that it's true... except for in the Forbidden Fruitlands. Lime tells her that the Forbidden Fruitlands are not a thing. Strawberry tells the two girls that they need to focus on what's important here. Lemon agrees, but then asks why J. Quincy is holding his whisk incorrectly. Lime notes that J. Quincy said that great recipes start with whisking while Blueberry interrupts once more, saying that according to legend, the whisk was magical and led to his success, which is why he hid it in a secret room. Lime stops Blueberry from saying more, furious at Blueberry's continued interruptions with her made-up "legends", as Lime has researched the Berryworks for years and knows there's no "Berry Guardians", "Toucans", "magic whisks", and definitely no "secret room.
Blueberry tries to tell one more legend, when Lime blows her top and prepares another historical fact to counter it, until Strawberry breaks up the fight, tired of all the history and legends, reminding the two that they're here to find their pets, not to talk about why the Berryworks was built, where the secret room is, or why J. Quincy's whisk is upside down as she brushes her hand against the painting. Strawberry accidentally triggers a switch inside the painting, as J. Quincy's whisk hand rotates around to point the tip upward. The painting moves out of the way, revealing a secret tunnel. The girls enter the tunnel, finding a secret room: J. Quincy Cupcake's hidden office. Blueberry proudly declares she knew it was true all along.
Strawberry find all of their pets playing a game of poker at J. Quincy's old desk, and runs to hug Custard. Strawberry calls the room cool, and notes that they wouldn't have found this place if it weren't for Custard's disappearance. The pets glare angrily at Custard, who sheepishly tugs at her collar. As Lime looks around the office, she reconsiders her previous stance on Blueberry's legends, and decides to ask her about the Tutti Frutti Toucans, which Blueberry happily obliges, noting that the Toucans can grow as big as airplanes and only eat grapes, as the two girls leave the room together.

Trivia[]
- This is the second episode where Strawberry is not the main focus, with the first being It's My Purr-ty.
- Coincidentally, both episodes are pet-related ones, though this episode is focused on Blueberry and Lime rather than the pets themselves.
- This is the first episode to premiere in 2022.
- This is the first episode to feature cutaway segments where Strawberry does none of them, as Lime Chiffon is the one to do all three cutaways.
- This episode shows more on Lime Chiffon and Blueberry Muffin's friendship and dynamic with one another.
- Custard's meows are reused audio from previous episodes, the meow from Strawberry hugging her comes from the very first episode.
- Pupcake's brief growl is likewise reused audio, in his case it's from the "Meet the Pets" minisode.
- This episode brings up "Berry Guardians", magical beings who plant enchanted seeds across the land. They're likely a substitute for Berrykins in this series.
Continuity[]
- J. Quincy Cupcake and the Berryworks' history is mentioned again, with Lime going further in-depth about the origin of the Berryworks and the founding of Big Apple City.
- Blueberry Muffin's extensive knowledge of Big Apple City's myths and legends comes up again, as she lists off several during the episode.
Errors[]
- During the scene when the girls were screaming upon looking at the picture of J. Quincy Cupcake, Lemon was not screaming. For some reason at the last bit she was screaming along with them too.
- Strawberry calls herself a "terrible person" when she loses track of Custard instead of "terrible berry", when it's been consistently established people are referred to as "berries" in this series.
